Although excess weight touches personal health, strains the medical system, and chips away at the national economy, too many people still see it as a simple matter of discipline.

Obesity is much more than just poor snacking habits or a lack of exercise, and its cause sits at the crossroads of genes, surroundings and society. Major organizations such as the Canadian Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization label it a chronic disease; ironically, Alberta is the lone province that has put that status into policy.

The gap between what healthcare providers know and what lawmakers do creates real harm. Canada’s bill for obesity sits at roughly $27.6 billion-20 per cent steeper than earlier calculations. Much of that expense is preventable, pouring out of avoidable complications and the uneven access to proven care.

Evidence-based interventions such as lifestyle programs, prescription medications, and bariatric surgery can help manage obesity and improve related health outcomes. New treatments, including GLP-1 receptor agonists like Wegovy, support long-term weight loss and have shown cardiovascular benefits in clinical trials.

However, access to these treatments is still limited. Many Canadians face high out-of-pocket costs due to inadequate insurance coverage. Both public and private insurers often classify obesity treatment as cosmetic instead of medically necessary. This misclassification perpetuates outdated stigmas and denies patients the care they need.

Obesity is linked to serious health conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, and reproductive problems such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Even small weight losses of 5 to 10% can greatly improve blood pressure, blood sugar levels, menstrual regularity, and joint pain.

Tackling obesity is not about looking good; it’s about health, dignity, and fairness. Insurers should follow the science and provide fair coverage for obesity treatment.
