Can our city do more?

Edmonton Garda Security Guard killed.

The last time a city police officer was killed the city footed a bill for close to a half million dollars. This person was doing close to the same job ( a lot of these guards use this a a stepping stone to become police ). Why is there so little being done to acknowledge this individual?

Maybe a GoFundMe or lite up the High Level bridge . Can we as a city not do something special? Although unarmed, they are called upon to act as police officers at times without warning or time to seek assistance.

Re-distribute wasted millions

Contrary to the letter written by Max Scharfenberger, salary negotiations are not determined by the amount that the City has budgeted but rather by the two parties at the bargaining table, otherwise what would be the point of negotiations?

Unlike our current mayor and most of council, CSU 52 members provide important and necessary services to the citizens of Edmonton and deserve a fair and reasonable wage settlement.

The solution to the city’s budgetary problems…to do so is easy: cut the compensation package for the mayor and councilors in half and re-distribute the millions in the budget for bicycle paths that few Edmontonians utilize to the wage settlement.

Problem solved!

Poking the bear

I cannot hold back any longer what I need to say and I am not a racist.

Mr. Brown of the National Council of Canadian Muslims…. that you and some of your people that abandoned Palestine for a better life, why do you expect our government of Canada to fight your battle between Hamas and Israel?

We also do not need your Sharia laws which women around the world a few years ago rallied against. We believe it is a cruel law and should be kept where it came from.

I am sorry Israel has responded like it has to the October 7th massacre, but Hamas poked the bear knowing full well of the consequences.

I know many good Muslim people, so settle down and quit giving immigrants a bad image.

If it’s not broke then why try to fix it?
For the Record:
I do not wish to become increasingly alienated from the rest of Canada.

I do not wish to have politicians deciding on medical issues. Leave this up to medically trained personnel. This government has already shown evidence of being influenced by special interest groups not concerned with the common good as much as with individual rights.

I do not wish my pension plan to be handled provincially. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it! I don’t mind helping to support Canadians in other provinces.

I do not wish to wait until 2050 to balance impact of fossil fuels on the environment. The tipping point for how effectively this can be done will be long past at that point.

And I am surprised that our Alberta provincial government criticizes the federal government for overreach while increasingly exhibiting this behavior themselves. I find it very distasteful that my tax money is being used to voice this criticism.

I am anxiously awaiting the next election. Before that time, a good reading assignment may be “The Tragedy of the Commons”.

No Censorship please
Re article “CRTC considering banning Fox News from Canadian cable packages” by Anja Karadeglija

It’s embarrassing to live in a country whose government censors people and information. For example the CRTC’s Feb. 2022 banning of RT (Russia Today) and this consideration of banning Fox.

Maybe the CBC is banned in Russia or China—but then we’re supposed to be better and fought against such behaviour in World War Two.

In conclusion if the CRTC and the Minister responsible for it want to censor people or info why don’t they move to Russia or China? No censorship here please.

Oilers deserve better reporting
I have been a Journal subscriber since 1960 and the Edmonton Journal lacks sports writeups in the last few years.

This morning when I got my paper there was not a word mentioned about the Edmonton Oilers hockey team.

Come on…. they are in the Stanley Cup playoffs and deserve
much more!

Where are the stats and game winners from the night before?

We deserve much more….we all do not have access to digital.

Hawrelak Park Heaven
Well, today was the last time that I will walk in Hawrelak Park for a while as, starting tomorrow, the park will be closed for rehabilitation for three years.

The park seems to have always been a part of my life. It’s been a place to picnic, skate, hike and take in festivals and concerts. It’s provided joy and solace, physical and mental health benefits, and so much more.

My daughter’s first skating experience was in her stroller with skis attached to the wheels. I have walked the trails with her and solo and I will truly miss the park in the coming months and years.

I understand that some of the trails will remain open for which I am grateful and I wish the workers all the best and good stewardship ahead.

Until we meet again, happy trails.

Bike Lanes Overkill?
My, only 100 m for bike lanes. How disappointing. I am sure majority of Edmonton tax payers would support a much higher expenditure . And our Mayor saying this would pay off financially in the future. What evidence is there to support this comment. I suspect none.

My experience.
Have driven on 105 ave west of 109 street 4 or 5 times per week for years. Bike lane nice and wide. Something to behold. Have not seen one bike. Have seen a few people pushing strollers. Lane always has excellent snow removal !

Drive 76 ave east of 109 street very often. Bikes in bike lane- conspicuous by their absence.

Oh please- spend more money on bike lanes so we can raise taxes even higher. I would be so filled with gratitude.

Healthcare should be a priority
Invest Surplus In Healthcare. While I agree with the letter writers idea of investing in health care, as Alberta nurses and doctors are the highest paid in Canada, I would suggest a different approach.

The Alberta Gov. should invest the surplus in scholarships for doctors and nurses. The student would be required to work in Alberta for a determined length of time in exchange for the scholarship.

I feel we don’t need better paid Doctors and Nurses we need MORE of them. It seems whenever the government mentions a surplus the special interest groups and gov. unions demand more.

This way ALL Albertans can benefit from the surplus for years to come.

Out of touch PM
What is happening in Canada? The government is now using the Emergencies Act to stifle peaceful protests. The act has been enhanced to further control crowd funding.

They are now obligating our financial institute to monitor crowd funding organizations. This Act was put in place to address real terrorists, not protestors. The financial institutes already are currently obligated to report any large and suspicious transfers of money. With changes that the PM and his government have just implemented, they now allow these institutes to place your bank account on hold based on you funding the Freedom Convoy. Basically you are considered a terrorist without any evidence confirmed by an unbiased governing body such as a court.

Does that sound like Canada? Not at all, but it certainly sounds like Russia, China, Cuba just to list a few countries. Is that what we want?

Our rights are being significantly effected by an out of touch PM. He cannot lead but only dictate his will on all Canadian citizens. Who else in government has supported this action? The federal NDP party. This should make you feel very uncomfortable with those in charge of our government. The Conservatives and the Peoples Party have been the only parties that has put up some resistance.

Politicians must take this action serious and take strong decisive actions against this tyrant.

The story is that the Freedom Convoy truckers were heavily armed. Yes, there were weapons confiscated by our police. The big Canadian media machine have suggested they were taken from truckers in the Freedom Convoy. Is that true? There is a different narrative if you listen to journalists that have spoken.
